If snow cover is thick, especially over relatively thin sea ice, the weight of the snow can push the ice down into the water below. The salty ocean water floods the snow and creates a salty, slushy layer. This flooded sea ice is more common in the Antarctic than the Arctic because there is typically thinner ice and more snowfall in Antarctica.

2014年1月1日 · “Frazil” is the name given to ice crystals in suspension in water and form in very cold water. The first stage of freezing gives an oily or opaque appearance to the surface of the water. The frazil ice is also called “lolly ice” or “slush.” It sporadically forms in open, turbulent, supercooled water.
The first stage is a 90 process that involves negligible heat exchange with the surrounding air. During this period, a dendritic ice network (slushy ice) forms through the liquid phase, releasing latent heat, and heating up the liquid toward the melting point. This stage is usually referred to as the “fast” or “recalescence” stage.
