I believe that because Mason was doing everything Reznov was doing in Black Ops 1, then Mason was actually doing everything he thought Reznov was doing in the desert in Blops 2. tl;dr Mason has giant balls and attributes him saving everybody to reznov because he did it in a state of psychosis.
