I'm sure Sesshoumaru is absolutely still alive. He's just too strong to be killed. I imagine to prevent any time paradoxes, he'd made sure to be as far away from the Higurashi family as much as possible, so events that involve Kagome's time travel will play out how they should.

Time traveling wasn't a big deal in inuyasha neither the present so it's ok if we won't know, except for Inuyasha meets kagome family there's no need for the present.
