Ancient Egypt (2500 BC) The earliest evidence of the harp is found in Ancient Egypt circa 2500 BC. They were shaped liked bows or angular and had very few strings (because they lacked a column they could not support much string tension).
By a quirk of nature prototypes of the arched harp family have survived: the Egyptian shoulder harps (Fig. IA) which were buried in desert tombs about 15oo B.C. have been preserved because the extreme-ly dry conditions prevented decay of the wood and the skin, though strings have perished.3 At the present time very similar harps exist
