Barbering is one example of an ARB, it is a malfunctional compulsive behavior that it is commonly observed in group-housed laboratory mice of certain strains (e.g. C57 derived strains & 129Sv derived strains). Barbering is often misinterpreted as an expression of dominance. However, several recent studies clearly falsify this interpretation.

Mice Barbering Etiology: Barbering in mice, depending on their genotype, is a complex behavior. Barbering most often occurs in female mice and can be attributed to dominant behavior, sexual over-grooming, maternal barbering in lactating mice, and stress-evoked barbering [1].
Although barbering is common in laboratory mice (Mus musculus), little is known about its effects, both on animal welfare and the research data collected from barbered mice. To gain information on the occurrence of barbering and related risk factors in animal facilities in Germany, we performed an online survey.
