We actually bought in advance but could see people paying on the day, keep an eye on the websites availability as if you were buying for tomorrow to give an idea.

We arrived on a cruise and the shuttle bus into the city dropped us a few blocks away from the museum, so we did not need a taxi. If you are on a ship, they should provide a tourist map, which will help. You need to buy tickets. You can do this online. I do not know about tours, but the museum is breathtaking in architecture and easy to navigate.
